Amanda Doran (graduated NCAD, 2012) is one of 17 artists featured in New Order: British Art Now, Saatchi Gallery, London (26 April – 9 June). Her paintings ooze the stuff of life and life-style. She wallows in the exuberance of a fluid and direct painterly language to present images that celebrate the grotesque and the familiar. The paintings can appear wildly intuitive, but they convey an unerring judgement in pulling together relationships between paint, pattern and composition.

As Ben Street points out on the Saatchi Gallery profile; The too-muchness of her painting is part of its vision of unselfconscious abundance: excess is the point. In Tattooed Lady the subject’s bulk transforms the space around her: space is flattened, and the complex arabesques of the decorated thighs seem to continue in the carpet and the curtains.
